MEET BREANNE JOHNSON
Meet Breanne Johnson -- founder of Salt & Light Trading Co. , a clothing company dedicated to providing a collection of ethically made apparel AND podcast host of the Dreamer & Doer podcast.
Tell us more about what you do and how you empower the community of women around you.
One of my greatest joys is to be a part of encouraging others to live a life of purpose in their sphere of influence. I want to empower them to show up for the people in their lives and love them well whether that be for their families, in their workplace, community, the nations, and beyond. One of the ways I do that is through my podcast as well as through my online clothing boutique.
One of my favorite quotes is: “Clothes may not change the world but the woman wearing them will.” It is my joy to provide ethically made products for women who are world changers!
Tell us more about your space/aesthetic?
I have thought long and hard about this because it is so very different from what is on trend right now (that used to make me feel less than) but the word that seems to fit me the most is Jungalow. Its the beach, meets jungle. This vibe has carried over from our business to home. You can take the girl out of the Amazon but you can’t take the Amazon out of the girl..which is why we have 64 houseplants (and counting). I love texture and patterns with lots of blues & greens.
What is your favorite room in your home?
Our bedroom! For whatever reason, our bedroom became the catch all for laundry, clutter, etc but I would always mention to my husband how I wanted it to be a place of relaxation, my place of rest in the midst of our crazy life. I basically wanted a room that made me feel like we were living near a tropical paradise full of culture and texture. I went away for a week last year and when I came home he had completely surprised me by taking a blank gray box to a beautiful room that brings me so much peace at the end of a long day. He even added a giant bean bag which has become my favorite place to snuggle up with my kids, work, & read. I really think he should consider a career in interior design. He’s done an amazing job!
Who or what inspires you?
Goodness, my list is so long!
Podcasting has become one of my favorite things I do and I am so inspired by Jamie Ivey who hosts The Happy Hour! I love the way she chats with her guests in such a vulnerable & real way that genuinely shares their story. In addition, we were recently vendors at Spring at the Silos at Magnolia and every single vendor there encouraged & inspired me. I was absolutely blown away by the creativity, passion, & gusto each business had. I loved being surrounded by people who loved their work that left me feeling like I had renewed vision & joy for my business.
What are you most proud of in the work that you do?
I am most proud when I hear that my encouragement has inspired someone to chase their dreams or that they’ve been inspired. I’ve received a couple messages from people who’ve let me know that they’ve started a business after talking with me! I truly believe we each have a unique voice and our story is worth telling.
At our most recent event, a mother of a 13 yo girl walked up to me and said:
”I wanted to let you know that my daughter has been following you on Instagram for a while. She loves following you and really looks up to you. She really wanted to come meet you today. Thank you for being a good role model for her.”
It is 110% NOT about the the clothes for me.
It is just a platform.
It’s the moments like these that I get to truly live out my greater business mission of encouraging others to live a life of purpose in their sphere of influence so they can encourage others to do the same.
I know that sounds like a lot of flowery language but here’s what that means for me: Living in who God has created you to be & living in obedience to what He has called you to do.
One last thing to live by,
Never underestimate the power of coffee and a girl with a dream.
